Campaign: Ghana office Projects

Volunteers needed to raise funds to support girl's education in Northern Ghana

This campaign is to fundraise 27,500.00 to support the education of some 200 girls for 3-5 years selected from the poorest of the poor families in the Northern Region of Ghana)

Improving Basic Education for Girls in Northern Ghana:
"Take care of me today and I will help you tomorrow"

What is the problem?

The northern regions of Ghana are the most deprived areas as far as education is concern for the girl child. The cultural practices of the area make it completely difficult for female children to attend basic educational level. They are meant to assist their mothers at home and learn how to do domestic work that will prepare them well for their future husband's homes. Even if they are to learn a trade/craft they are sent to do things like tailoring which has dominate the whole area and does not yield any economic value to improve on their livelihood. They are not even taught how to read or write English making it very difficult for them to interact with the rest of the society. Tailoring which is their main job is just another way for them to be useful in their homes to sew or stitch husband or children dresses when they are torn. From our survey we have notice that this sole activity has been the order of day here in the northern region of Ghana and has been going on for more than 10 years. When we try to find out what graduates from this craft are doing now to earn a living we saw that more than 85% of them between the ages of 15-20 years are already married with children and are not actually involve in any business of sewing nor having any workshop of theirs. 30% of them are having one sewing machine at home to help stitch family dresses. None of them could express herself well in English. They are just baby factories in their husband's homes and are daily been subjected to all forms of violence and abuse.

What has to be done?

We have identify homes where most of these poor girls are coming from and in collaboration with their parents agreed to look for available financial means to help educates young girls from these home so that they will be able to further their education and avoid the same route used by their elder sisters. This means will help stop early girl child marriage and will also improve on their health situation at tender age. 200 young girls have been envisaged to benefit from this project which is meant at providing them with basic school needs and tuition for five years to continue education. After their graduation from basic educational level lot of negotiations would have taken place with their parents to continue to further their education to higher level so that they may become responsible citizens and help the family in the near future.

How will this idea positively impact the lives girls?

This project once implemented will have lot of impact on the lives of girls who are the most vulnerable in the society. It is designed in such a way that it will improve on the level of girls interaction in the society; it will also reduces gender gaps and empower girls as useful citizens to the society in the near future. It should be noted here that once a woman is empowered the livelihood of the community is improved upon. Once you educate a girl you have educated the whole nation. This is one of our core values and we will make sure that the objective of this project is achieved when it is under implementation.

How people can help?

People can participate where they are living around the world by helping to spread this idea to their immediate environment and also make a donation towards its realisation in the coming three to five years. They can also participate by raising funds and sending to the organisation in support of this project in Ghana. We need 27,500.00 to complete this program. They can also participate by donating used computers which will be used to train these girls to acquire computer skills. School books and dresses can also be contributed. All items and money contribute for this project will be used to pay fees, buy uniforms, books and other school requirements for the children for the next 3- 5 years. The computers and books will be used in a resource centre to be created to train these girls on basic computer skills. Book will be used to promote their basic reading skills in English.

Help us raise funds to challenge pervasive accusation of Women as Witches in some communities in Northern Ghana.

This Campaign is meant to raise funds to enable us realised this project which is aim at addressing the pervasive accusations of women as witches in the Zabzugu Tatale district in the Northern Region of Ghana. The large Gnani witch camp is based in this district. Witchcraft accusations are a culturally sanctioned form of gender violence. Committed predominantly against women, many of whom challenge dominant gender norms or are disempowered by age and economic status, these allegations frequently lead to the banishment and lynching of the accused persons. This fundamental denial of human and citizenship rights is both an alarming and markedly complex problem. In the context of community development and socialization process in the northern region, witchcraft has become a major hindrance to the realization of cohesion, equity, justice and sustainable livelihood.

The marked absence of information and education about the law and the rights of women in the rural communities has contributed to the increasing evidence of witchcraft allegations and the consequential hardships against women. (Details will be made available on request)

How people can help?

We are out to Raise 30,000.00 to stop violence on women accused of witchcraft in Northern Ghana.

Every one around the world interested in stopping all forms of violence on women are hereby requested to take active part in this campaign and make a donation for us to realised the project this campaign is out to raise funds for. We need 30,000.00 to get it to an end. This aspect against women can only be eradicated once there is enough funds to enable us intervene in the communities and create awareness on the ills of this issue which is against human right and freedom of women. Together with you out there we are sure to realise this project. Take a step and make a donation towards this and see how your money will impact the lives of some women wrongfully accused of a crime they are innocent of. Please you can directly contribute any amount of money you wish as an individual or a group. Let us know your interest by sending us an email on paorp.vwc@gamail.com.

We will furnish you with details of our work on this project including narrative and financial reports. Construction of a "Pan African Youth Vocational Training Centre in Bolgatanga Ghana" (2010 project)

Project Information

In June 2009, a baseline survey was carried out by PAORP-VWC Ghana in Upper East Region Ghana in collaboration with local partners. The survey revealed that with the increasing rate of poverty, parenthood attitudes toward responsibility have become increasingly negative in the past years. The people have developed a sense of powerlessness and the resulting poor attitudes have lead to the suspension of educational facilities for children, poor medical care, poor nutritional intake among families; an overall regression in the standards of living. The number of vulnerable youth increases every year. These youth lack vocational skills and the capacity to become self-reliant. Unemployment is rampant. Most of them turn to migrate out of their villages to cities like Accra and Kumasi in search of jobs that not existing. When they arrived Accra or Kumasi and had no jobs to do because of lack of skills in any of the jobs they are searching for, they are forced into prostitution, arm robbery and Worst forms of child labor abuse. The end result especially to young girls is unwanted pregnancy with most of them acquiring diseases like HIV/AIDS which they later return to their local communities to spread among their fellow villagers.

PAORP-VWC Ghana believes that unless those affected are provided with vocational skills, the number of vulnerable children in Bolgatanga Ghana will continue to grow. Our goal is to construct a multipurpose vocational training center with workshop equipments like carpentry tools, sewing machines, farm tools, hairdressing equipments, motor mechanic tools etc to be provided by Tools for Self Reliance UK by the early part of 2010, where youth of both sexes will come in to learn skills that will help them become self-reliant after graduating from the center. The center will focus on teaching youth (boys and girls between the ages of 12 to 25 years of age) from low income households modern skills in Carpentry work, sewing and dressmaking, motor mechanic, bicycle and Motor Bike repairs, hairdressing, etc.

They will also learning basic English Language and Mathematic and other business skills that will help them to market themselves when undertaking businesses of their own. We are targeting about 200-350 vulnerable youth for three years vocational training which after then we will graduate them and enroll new set into the center. Our training will take recognizance of local market for different trades in order to a) identify in which trade new enterprises are required, b) to make sure that saturation of a limited market is not one of the unintended impacts of training and c) consult stakeholders over the appropriateness of the planned intervention this means that our target group we are hoping to support will often determine the trades we are likely to want to teach.

We need $55,000.00 to build workshops, offices and classrooms for the girls and boys who will be attending this training centre.

How you can help?

$30 will buy three bags of Cement for the work

$$20 will buy two roofing sheets (Zinc)

$50 will pay two technicians to put up the workshops and classroom.

$13,000 will build a modern office and Conference hall for the centre.

There are many ways you can help in cash or in kind. Kindly send us an email using paorp.vwc@gamil.com now to tell us how you want to help out this project.
